PWS Students Transition to At-Home Learning

As of Tuesday, April 27th, Park West School (and all HRCE schools) is closed for students, as directed by Nova Scotia Public Health and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) due to COVID-19.

On Thursday, April 29th, students will transition to online/at-home learning for at least the next two weeks.   The COVID situation will be re-assessed at the end of that period.

Our staff has been considering this possibility and preparing for it all through the year.  This phase of online learning will be different than last year as we are all better prepared to engage in rich, meaningful activities during our on line learning experience.

In the coming days there will be follow up information presented via e mail, our school website and our school SWIFT messaging system.

Teachers will be communicating with their families regarding learning activities and schedules.  The learning experiences will be made up of synchronous and asynchronous activities with the teachers trying to connect with students as much as possible.  We would like to direct you to the EECD Back to School Plan for more details regarding expected times for student engagement and other information related to online learning.

Elementary (Grade P – 6 )

Our Elementary teachers will be connecting with students and families starting Thursday.  These connections will be made up of whole group meetings, small group meetings and individual meetings with the classroom teacher and specialist teachers throughout the week.  Along with direct instruction and support.  Students will also be provided with activities, including specialist activities that they can work on independently.  Teachers will be available throughout the day to answer questions, provide support, as they will also be present for the school day hours between 8:35 and 3:05.

Junior high (grades 7-9)

Tomorrow you will be receiving  an online schedule for your child. Classes will be held via Google Meet, beginning Thursday, April 29th. Students are asked to log in promptly at the beginning of each class. The schedule allows for a movement break between each class to allow students to move, grab a snack and to prepare for the next class.

Morning homeroom attendance will be done via Google meet each morning at 8:50 am.  Attendance will also be taken during individual classes.

Each class is 45 minutes in length and will allow for direct teaching and time for students to work independently and ask questions.

School staff are available regular school hours to assist you, 8:35 am - 3:05 pm.

Earlier in the year, families were asked to identify if, schools did pivot to on line learning, who would they need a device for home use.  If you have identified that you would need a device , you are asked to pick one up at the school on Wednesday, April 28th, between the hours of 10:00 and 11:35, or between 12:30 and 2:30.
Also if you have contacted your teacher and identified that you will also need a device, please pick a device up from the school during the same hours.
