Primary Students and Playground Equipment (for September 2018)

Primary (and pre-primary) Students and Playground Equipment

SIP (School Insurance Program) is a not-for-profit organization that  is owned and operated by  the public school centres for education (formerly school boards) of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Community College, and manages all aspects of property and casualty-related insurance for the province’s schools and community colleges. SIP regulations state that children under the age of 5 years old will not be permitted to use playground equipment on the school grounds unless the equipment has been officially CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved for that age group.  Equipment that is CSA approved will have a sticker on the equipment.   Most of the equipment in our school district is not approved.   To ensure compliance, and in consideration of liability, the HRCE (Halifax Regional Centre for Education) is directing all schools to not permit students in grade primary to use the playground equipment on school property until January 1 (2019).   As of that date all students in grade primary will be at least 5 years old.   This regulation will be in effect in September 2018 when school opens for a new year.

In summary:  from September 5, 2018, until January 1, 2019, grade primary students will not be permitted to use the playground equipment on our school grounds.
